Port Gibson – As General Ulysses S. Grant marched on Vicksburg in the spring of 1863, his army fought a battle outside Port Gibson, Mississippi. Union forces normally would have destroyed anything of military value in the city, but when Grant rode down picturesque Church Street, he saw this church - the Presbyterian Church - (among other buildings) and decided to spare the city.
