Dr. Haller Nutt, a rich cotton baron, began building his dream home in 1860, envisioning the 5-story, 30,000-square foot mansion as “An Oriental Villa.” Samuel Sloan of Philadelphia, the architect, brought in the finest craftsmen and workers from Pennsylvania to create what was to be the most extravagant residence ever constructed in Mississippi’s history.
