Although they must have enjoyed a great view of the Tonto Basin, no one knows why the Salado abandoned the cliff dwellings in the early to mid 1400s.  Perhaps it was drought, disease, or warfare that led to their departure, but long before Europeans arrived in the New World, the cliff dwellings had been abandoned to wind and sun.
