1000places > EPHESUS - The imposing Ephesus Theater, the largest in ancient Anatolia, had a seating capacity of 25,000.  First built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC, the present theater dates from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. The Romans rebuilt and expanded the theater to stage gladitorial combats.
1000places > TURKEY - When we left for Turkey on March 27, 2008, we weren't sure what to expect.  The country defies easy description. Both East and West - and in some ways, neither. Secular yet Islamic. Slightly larger than Texas but extraordinarily diverse in geography and culture.  More ancient ruins than Greece, yet it has existed as a nation only since 1923.  Deeply wary of foreign intrusion, it is one of the world's ten most visited countries.

Over the next two weeks, we would find learn about this complex and fascinating country.

1000places > PRELUDE TO PETRA - The Sig has sides as high as 650 feet.  Even if there wasn't a hidden city awaiting us, a hike through this amazing geologic phenomenon would be worth the trip.
1000places > AJLUN CASTLE - Sometimes the most interesting view was straight up.  The stone arches that formed the roof of one of the chambers in the castle were a study in geometric beauty.
1000places > OLD CAIRO - One of the "must see" sites in Cairo is The Citadel, a hilltop fortress begun in AD 1176 by the famed Muslim general Saladin to protect Cairo from the Christian Crusaders. To build its massive walls, he and his successors ripped stones from the pyramids.  The fortress served as Egypt’s seat of power for the next 700 years.
1000places > GIZA PLATEAU - In the afternoon of our first full day in Egypt,  we made our way to the country's s signature attraction: the Pyramids of Giza – perfect in form, massive in size, the ultimate expressions of the pharaohs’ quest for eternity.
1000places > Albuquerque, NM - Our "Route 66 Road Trip" in October 2004 brought us to Albuquerque, NM, in time for one of the great photographic spectacles on the planet - the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta.
