1000places > SACRED VALLEY, PERU - But soon the landscape changed. The valley closed in around the rail tracks.
1000places > SACRED VALLEY, PERU - Arriving back in Ollantaytambo, we boarded our bus for a trip out of the Sacred Valley.  As we climbed the eastern hillside from the village of Urubamba, we stopped for a moment to take one last look at the panorama and the high Andean glacier called "Veronica" which the villagers claim watches over and protects the valley.
1000places > SACRED VALLEY, PERU - From our train window we could see more Inca terraces.  It seemed that the Incas had created terraces on almost every available inch of the Andean highlands (in fact, satellite images have revealed that these ancient terraces covered more land than is currently cultivated in all the Andean nations).
1000places > SACRED VALLEY, PERU - The Urubamba that had been so calm on our float trip the day before now turned into foaming rapids.
1000places > URUBAMBA, PERU - As we eagerly bounded from our bus to our assigned "tuk-tuk," these two local women weren't exactly sure what all the fuss was about.
1000places > URUBAMBA, PERU - Well, at least most of our group was on the move.  As luck would have it, our "tuk-tuk" experienced mechanical problems midway through our circuit, requiring our driving to pull over, borrow some tools from a local repair shop, and repair a faulty front wheel.
1000places > URUBAMBA, PERU - Then, in a colorful caravan of speeding tuk-tuks, we were off...careening through the streets of Urubamba.
