1000places > PALENQUE, MEXICO - In 1948, the archaeologist Alberto Ruz was investigating four curious stone plugs in the floor of the upper level of the Temple of Inscriptions.  He discovered a secret passage filled with rubble. After removing the rubble a hidden stairway was visible. This winding tunnel led to a crypt deep within the interior of the pyramid. Behind a triangular slab door, Ruz made a startling discovery of a wonderful stone chamber enclosing an elaborately carved sarcophagus and the remains of Pacal.
