1000places > ROME ILLUMINATED - We walked by Trajan's Market one last time. This time it glowed under a full moon.
1000places > GALLERIA BORGHESE - Cardinal Scipione Borghese was an avid collector of art of all types - sculptures, paintings, mosaics and bas-reliefs, mainly from 15th to 18th centuries. Today, the former villa has been turned into one of the most elaborate art museums in the world...(and once again, photographs of the interior were prohibited).
1000places > VILLA D'ESTE - The villa was built on the side of a steep hill, providing panoramic overlooks of the valley below and the ancient ruins of a Roman arena.
1000places > VILLA D'ESTE - There are waterfalls around the turn of every pathway - many framed by the colorful foliage of the Italian autumn.
1000places > VILLA D'ESTE - We had only an hour or so to wander the grounds of the estate. They say there is no more beautiful complex of gardens anywhere in Italy.
1000places > VILLA D'ESTE - We returned to Rome and bid farewell to our tour group. On our own for the next three days, we arranged a trip to Tivoli to see Hadrian's Villa (shown earlier in this gallery) and to the Villa D'Este, once the 16th century home of Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este. At the center of the spacious estate is the famous Water Organ Fountain which once emitted musical tones from its water pipes.
1000places > VILLA D'ESTE - Even the outlying buildings were elaborate structures of mosaics and marble carvings.
1000places > VILLA D'ESTE - What would a Renaissance-era villa be without elaborately painted frescoes on the ceilings. Every room we entered had ceilings like this.
1000places > TIVOLI - Even if Hadrian's Villa and Villa D'Este did not exist, it would be worth the trip to visit Tivoli. The town is thought to date from 1215 BC -- that's four centuries before the founding of Rome. It was originally called Tibur, and in fact, the local residents still refer to themselves as Tiburtini, not Tivolesi.
