1000places > CHIANG MAI - A 40-minute drive that evening brought us to a local home for a Thai family dinner. In the kitchen, our hostess Suree Chaiwong and her mother showed how to make a rice flour dough stuffed with fried coconut and steamed in a banana leaf.

1000places > CHIANG MAI - For several minutes, our hot air rice bags - still brightly lit by the candles - floated higher and higher into the night sky, ultimately disappearing out of sight. (Thankfully we heard of no local fires or suspicious arsons reported that night.)
1000places > CHIANG MAI - For the next hour we cruised quietly down the river, sipping our Mai-Tais while passing under several of Chiang Mai's bridges.
1000places > CHIANG MAI - That evening we boarded a river boat for a twilight cruise down the Mae Ping River. Here Jeanne joins Larry and Ruth for a photo before diving into the snack tray (and the Mai-Tais).
1000places > CHIANG MAI - After leaving the boat, we celebrated a "mini-festival" in the traditional manner of local celebrations like Loy Krathrong. We lit candles suspended beneath rice paper bags and watched as the hot air carried them aloft.
