We travel to a modern nation of ancient ruins and merging cultures.
ISTANBUL - We began our trip in Istanbul, a city caught in the great divide: between East and West, between modern and medieval, between secularism and Islamic fundamentalism. Founded by the Greeks as Byzantium in 660 BC, transformed into Constantinople by the Romans in AD 330, and called Istanbul (meaning "to the city") by the conquering Turks in the 15th century, it truly lies on the dividing line - between continents and cultures.
