1000places > MOUNT NEBO - Inside the chapel in what is called the "Old Baptistry," we found the most interesting of the mosaics. Four rows of human and animal figures (bears, ostriches, lions, and in the lower right, either a spotted camel or a strange looking giraffe) have led scholars to a variety of interpretations. No one really knows the true meaning of the mosaic, which was found when another mosaic on top was removed. Researchers now believe there is yet another mosaic beneath this one.
1000places > MADABA - After a hard day of exploring, our tour leader thought we deserved a treat. And since he was a native of Madaba, he knew the best place in the area to stop for a tray of Jordanian baklava. (You knew it was "local" from the fact that there were no English words on the store's sign.)
1000places > MADABA - A tray of Jordanian baklava - a pastry made of layers of dough filled with chopped nuts, mainly pistachios, and sweetened with sugar and honey syrup.
1000places > MADABA - Our group proved they could eat as well as they toured.
1000places > MADABA - Jeanne goes back for seconds.
1000places > MADABA - The pastry shop sold a variety of nuts. Jeanne bought a package of Jordan almonds for about $2.80 a pound, about a fourth what they would have cost in the U.S.
1000places > JERASH - An hour’s drive north of Amman is the ancient city of Jerash. As we approached, we were greeted by the imposing Triumphal Arch built to honor the Roman emperor Hadrian's arrival at Jerash in AD 129. Jerash ("Gerasa" in ancient times or in the Bible as "the region of the Gerasenes" ) is one of the largest and best preserved examples of ancient Roman architecture in the world.
1000places > JERASH - As impressive as Hadrian's Arch is (previous picture), it was not the true entrance gate to the city. The South Gate, similarly styled but somewhat smaller, marked the actual beginning of this amazing Roman city.
1000places > JERASH - We entered the city as its Roman inhabitants did: through the South Gate and into the imposing Oval Plaza. The spacious plaza, nearly the size of a football field, is surrounded by a colonnade of 1st century Ionic columns.
