1000places > THE GIZA PLATEAU - A panorama of the pyramids at Giza. To the left is the Great Pyramid of Khufu, in the middle is the pyramid of Khafre and to the right is Menkaure's and his queens' pyramids. Note how the middle pyramid appears to be taller because it was built on a higher part of the plateau.
1000places > GIZA PLATEAU - The pyramids used to rest in peace and dignity far from the nearest town. But the growth of Cairo had to be done in southern direction where there was room. Today the city's sprawling surburbs have been built to the very edge of the pyramids.
1000places > THE SPHINX - GUARDIAN OF GIZA: Surveying the sands of Giza, the Sphinx has stood guard with regal poise since about 2500 BC – although apparently for much of that time, without a nose. Pharaoh Khafre commissioned it along with his pyramid, probably to serve as his massive stone portrait. Because it is carved from an outcrop of bedrock that remained after the quarrying of stone for the Great Pyramid, some archaeologists believe it was created to transform a blot on the landscape into a symbol of royal power.
1000places > The Sphinx was the first true colossal piece of sculpture in ancient Egypt. Egyptians would not carve statues of such proportions again until the reign of Ramesses II, some 1,200 years later.
1000places > Who wouldn't want their photograph in front of such a famous backdrop?
1000places > We also couldn't resist posing in front of the great icon of ancient Egypt.
1000places > In 1998 Egyptian workers completed a 10-year restoration of the Sphinx. The project included replacing more than 12,000 limestone blocks along the torso and limbs of the sculpture. Jeanne decided to make a closer inspection of the Sphinx's restored hindquarters.
1000places > In the early morning, one of the local employees at the Giza Plateau walks to work, nonchalantly passing by a sculpture that has represented the essence of Egypt for thousands of years.
1000places > GIZA PLATEAU - As we left the Giza Plateau, we looked back to see a camel-mounted guard keeping a solitary watch. We wondered if he perhaps was imagining the millions of visitors who for nearly 4,000 years have walked the rocky trail in front of him.
