1000places > UXMAL, MEXICO - A 300-mile drive brought us to the Uxmal Hacienda. When we opened the doors off of our room, greeting us in the fading light of the evening was this scene of a Mayan ruin (the Pyramid of the Magician).
1000places > UXMAL, MEXICO - Approaching the Uxmal site, we realized that what we had seen the evening before was simply the upper portion of a gigantic pyramid - the Pyramid of the Magician.

1000places > UXMAL, MEXICO - Yet another view of the Pyramid of the Magician. Uxmal was one of the largest cities of the Yucatán peninsula, and at its height was home to about 25,000 Maya. Like the other Puuc sites, it flourished in the Late Classic period (around 600-900AD).

According to an ancient legend, a magician-god named Itzamna was single handedly supposed to have constructed the pyramid in one night. From archaeological excavation however, we know that the pyramid was constructed in several superimposed phases.
