1000places > SOUTH SEAS - Rogers and Hammerstein may have called their musical South Pacific but less than 15 seconds of it actually was filmed in Polynesia. In 2004, we decided to spend somewhat longer than that exploring what French painter Henri Matisse called "one of the seven wonders of an artist's heaven." On October 25 we began 23 days of adventure on six of the 118 islands that comprise the South Pacific paradise of Polynesia.
1000places > PAPEETE, TAHITI - The islands of Polynesia are all about color - and there is no better display of the islands' colors than in its flowers.
1000places > PAPEETE, TAHITI - With its profusion of flowers, it probably makes sense that even though the English were the first foreigners to visit the islands (Samuel Wallis, followed by James Cook), it is the French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville who is memorialized in Papeete's central park.
1000places > PAPEETE, TAHITI - Tourists are not the only creatures attracted to the colors of Tahiti. A flowering lilypad in Papeete's central park attracts a bee.
1000places > PAPEETE, TAHITI - Color abounds everwhere, such as this market in Papeete.
1000places > PAPEETE, TAHITI - A pond of lilypads in Papeete's central park.
1000places > PAPEETE, TAHITI - The color of the islands is also present in the flowers and dresses worn by the local women.
1000places > PAPEETE, TAHITI - At a local craft center, a Tahitian woman weaves a basket.
1000places > PAPEETE, TAHITI - An astounding - and colorful - array of fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, handicrafts, and other items are sold under the big tin pavilion of Papeete's bustling public market.
