1000places > CARACOL, BELIZE - After exploring the centerpiece of the Caracol site - Caana - it was time to descend from the "Sky Palace" (which, one will note, our group accomplished in various manners).
1000places > CARACOL, BELIZE - I was the last of the group to leave the site, turning around after the others to take one final look at this still-emerging Maya giant. By late afternoon, the site was eerily vacant and still. One could almost hear the sounds of an ancient people rising from the silence of a thousand years.
1000places > SAN IGNACIO, BELIZE - Our final evening in the Five Sisters dining room we had our last group meal, raising a toast to two weeks of packed days, long walks, and steep stairs....and a magnificent journey along the "Route of the Maya."
1000places > A FINAL WORD....There are probably hundreds of guides that can show you Central America. But we were fortunate to have had one who went to exceptional lengths to ensure that we truly experienced the region, its culture, its people, and its heritage. Ruben Dario Gomez was one of the most energetic people we had ever met, a native Quiche Maya who was passionate about his people and visibly proud of his land. To travel alongside hime through the world of the Maya - both ancient and present-day - was an experience we will never forget.
