1000places > ATHENS, GREECE - If there is a place that pinpoints the end of Greece's golden age, some legends say this may be it. Tucked away on the side of Philopappou Hill across fromthe Acropolis are these prison caves. Popular tradition says that this was the prison of Socrates where in 399 B.C., he drank the hemlock that killed him - and many scholars say, ancient Greece began a downhill slide.
1000places > ATHENS TODAY - Athens is today a city that is reinvigorating itself, still basking in the success of the 2004 Olympics. A new expanded subway, better highways, more trees, fresh paint...all give Athens a new charm. And there is no place more charming than the Plaka, with the ever-present Acropolis watching over its narrow streets and brightly colored shops.

1000places > ATHENS, GREECE - Tavernas and restaurants are scattered throughout the Plaka. Although many prepare in the early evening for tourists, the crowds really don't begin arriving until well after dark. Most Greeks don't come for dinner until around 10 p.m.
1000places > ATHENS, GREECE - To see Athens properly, you must walk. In much of "Old Athens" (the Plaka, for example), automobile traffic is limited, and pedestrians can freely stroll the streets.
1000places > ATHENS, GREECE - Even outside the pedestrian-friendly sections of Athens, the streets are tree-lined and pleasant to walk.
