1000places > PERU - LAND OF THE INCAS: For those who are interested in all things ancient, Peru is on the "must see" list. So in October 2006, we embarked on a 10-day trip that would take us to Lima, into the Sacred Valley, and to one of the great archeological wonders of the world - Machu Picchu.
1000places > LIMA, PERU - Peru is largely a country of two cultures: Inca and Spanish. We began our visit in Lima in La Plaza Mayor where in 1535 the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro whipped out his sword and christened his new capital Ciudad de los Reyes, the "City of Kings." Today the Catedral stands on the site; the present building dates to the 18th century.
1000places > LIMA, PERU - Pizarro didn't have much time to enjoy his new city. His former residence was built where the Palacio de Gobierno (Government Palace) stands today. But in 1541, he was assassinated - not by revengeful Incas, but by rival Spaniards. The present building was completed in 1938.
1000places > LIMA, PERU - Today, the Government Palace is guarded by the Hussares de Junin regiment dressed in the ceremonial uniforms and ornamental helmets of the early 19th century.
1000places > LIMA, PERU - Today the historic section of Lima has been repainted much as it was in the 1800s.
1000places > LIMA, PERU - The "jewel" of colonial Lima is almost certainly the Monasterio de San Francisco. Facing a small square full of pigeons, its extraordinary stone front is painted in the yellow ochre typical of the colonial period.

1000places > LIMA, PERU - Deep below the Monasterio de San Francisco are catacombs where the skulls and bones of hundreds of monks have been arranged according to type.
1000places > LIMA, PERU - Our first hotel in Lima was the Antiqua Miraflores, a converted mansion build in the early 1900s in one of the city's more upscale districts.
